In the first five months of 2023, Brazil saw a significant rise in international tourist arrivals.

The country welcomed approximately 2.97 million foreign visitors, marking a 108% increase compared to the same period in the previous year.

According to data from the Ministry of Tourism, May was a particularly busy month with over 292,300 tourists visiting Brazil, a 44.5% increase compared to May 2022.

The majority of these tourists hailed from Argentina (1.24 million), followed by the United States (271.1 thousand), and Paraguay (215.5 thousand).

Collectively, visitors from these three countries constituted nearly half of all foreign tourists.

Chile and Uruguay also featured in the top five countries of origin for tourists.

Popular destinations within Brazil included Paraná, Rio de Janeiro, Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina, and São Paulo.

The Minister of Tourism, Daniela Carneiro, attributed this growth to policy changes in the country, stating that Brazil’s increased engagement globally and commitment to sustainability have made it an attractive destination for travelers.

Tourism has also positively impacted Brazil’s economy.

Foreign tourists contributed US$2.721 billion to the economy in the first five months of 2023, a 35.9% increase from the same period last year.

In May alone, tourists spent US$567 million, marking the record’s highest spend for that month.
