Justice Alexandre de Moraes authorized Jair Bolsonaro to be admitted to DF Star hospital for surgery to treat a bilateral inguinal hernia.

A Federal Police medical board concluded the operation should not be delayed. Bolsonaro’s lawyers had sought the authorization on December 9.

Federal Police experts told the court the condition has been resistant to treatment and is already disrupting routines.

They cited worsening sleep and eating and warned that delay could raise the risk of hernia complications as intra-abdominal pressure increases.

The same review addressed Bolsonaro’s persistent hiccups and deemed a phrenic nerve block a technically appropriate option.

Bolsonaro told examiners the hiccups began in September 2018 after his first surgery following the stabbing attack during that year’s campaign.

The symptom improved after about a month, he said, but returned after subsequent operations—seven in total.

Since his most recent procedure, he reported the hiccups have not fully stopped, with only occasional one-to-two-day breaks over the last seven months before episodes return and persist for days, affecting sleep and appetite.

Moraes rejected the defense request for “humanitarian” house arrest during recovery. He noted Bolsonaro’s custody site is near the hospital, limiting emergency-access concerns.

Bolsonaro’s medical team has said the admission could last five to seven days. The ruling requires lawyers to submit the surgery schedule; after that, the case is to be sent to federal prosecutors for an expedited opinion.

Bolsonaro is being held at the Federal Police facility in Brasília to serve a 27-year sentence after a Supreme Court conviction in September tied to a coup plot following his 2022 election defeat.

Online, supporters cast the refusal of house arrest as rigid, while critics argued medical care should not change a sentence.
