Bids Roll in For New Bridge Between Guyana and Suriname

Two global companies are bidding to construct a bridge over the Corentyne River, which separates Guyana and Suriname.

Both nations, one English-speaking and the other Dutch-speaking, are part of the emerging oil hotspot in South America.

Ballast Nedham from the Netherlands and China Road and Bridge are the contenders.

In 2020, both countries signed a memorandum to explore building this bridge. Earlier this year, they also agreed to conduct a feasibility study.

The plan is to use a simple yet effective model for design, construction, financing, operation, and maintenance.

When finished, the connection will handle ships up to 47,000 deadweight tons. Additionally, the bridge will offer 100 meters of horizontal space and 43 meters of vertical space.

A Trinidad-based firm, WSP Caribbean, has already studied the best construction model through a public-private partnership.

Next, both countries will evaluate the bids. They will then pick a company to build the viaduct.

This bridge will connect Moleson Creek in Guyana to South Drain in Suriname. Before finalizing, the countries will complete technical and financial checks.

In 2020, Guyana’s President Ifraan Ali said the bridge will open new opportunities. Suriname’s President, Chandrikapersad Santokhi, also believes the passage will mark a new era.

Background

This bridge idea isn’t new; it’s been discussed for years. The goal is to improve trade and strengthen the alliance between Guyana and Suriname.

The Corentyne River has always been both a border and a connection point. Both governments want to make movement easier for people and goods.

Recently, regional integration has gained focus, pulling in international interest for such projects.

This bridge symbolizes a step toward broader regional development and cooperation.
