At least three soldiers injured in bomb attack in Paraguay

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – At least three military personnel were injured in an explosive attack in northeastern Paraguay, where the Marxist EPP guerrilla group operates, reported military sources and local media.

The Internal Defense Operations Command (CODI) of the Joint Task Force (FTC) indicated on its Twitter account that the event occurred between the departments of Concepción and Amambay.

“We report three wounded, none of them seriously,” the report added and detailed that the attack was against an FTC patrol.

The radio station ABC Cardinal said, citing preliminary information, that the vehicle in which the soldiers were traveling was attacked on the grounds of the Paraíso ranch.

In that property, the radio station recalled, two girls of Argentinean nationality, daughters of leaders of the guerrilla of the Paraguayan People’s Army (EPP), died in September 2020 during a confrontation with the military.

The newspaper version indicated that a cell of that guerrilla group accused of kidnapping two farmers and a retired teacher on March 5 would be responsible for today’s (April 27) attack.

The bodies of the peasants, identified as Esteban David Valenzuela, 28, and Julio César Aveiro, 31, were found on April 2 on a farm located between Concepción and Amambay.

Retired teacher Carlos González was released on March 14.

The EPP emerged as a guerrilla in March 2008 and had its embryo in a leftist group accused of kidnappings such as that of Cecilia Cubas, daughter of former president Raul Cubas (1998-1999), found dead in 2005 despite the payment of a millionaire ransom.
