After Cancelling his Visit to New York, Bolsonaro is due to go to Texas in May, Says Spokesperson

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The President’s spokesperson, Otávio Rêgo Barros, said on Monday (sixth) that President Jair Bolsonaro is still expected to travel to Dallas, in the United States, in May. The trip, according to the spokesperson, should occur between May 14th and 16th.

Rêgo Barros did not confirm that Bolsonaro’s possible departure to Dallas would be related to receiving the Person of the Year award from the Brazil-United States Chamber of Commerce. “The issue has not yet been finalized,” he said.

This award was planned to be given in New York, but Bolsonaro cancelled the trip after locations chosen by the organization for the ceremony refused to host the event.

In addition, companies sponsoring the event withdrew their support for Bolsonaro, and the mayor of New York, Bill de Blasio, even asked one of the chosen locations not to receive the president and to consider him a “dangerous human being”.

“The issue has not yet been finalized. There is a possibility that yes, there will be activities planned in Dallas […] with the award that would have been given in New York,” said spokesperson Rêgo Barros.

The President’s spokesperson said, without citing names, that some American authorities “do not know how to take advantage” of the good democratic environment in the United States, and therefore, Bolsonaro will visit another city within the country.

“Our President has already received several invitations from other [U.S.] states that ensure he will be honored properly when he arrives there.”

“It will probably be in Texas between May 14th and 16th. Other authorities, other businessmen, other politicians, including some from the Democratic Party, invited our President to join them in celebrating the democratic and beneficial environment of the United States,” asserted Rêgo Barros.

The President’s spokesperson also pointed out that Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings is a Democrat, as is Bill de Blasio. It is not known, however, whether Bolsonaro will be received by the mayor.
