Las Chispas, a silver-gold mine in the neighbouring state of Sonora, will receive US$24 million and 119 kilometres of drilling.

Together the two Mexican sites account for a large slice of the record budget, underlining how central the country has become to Coeur’s future.

Mexico is the world’s largest silver producer, and its northern states have drawn miners for centuries. Chihuahua and Sonora form part of a mineral belt worked since the colonial era, yet modern crews are still finding fresh veins in that old ground.

What the Drills Are Finding

The early results are encouraging. At Palmarejo’s Eastern District, holes at the San Miguel and La Unión targets have hit wide, high-grade intercepts of silver and gold.

Crucially, Coeur says the deposits remain “open in all directions” — mining shorthand for ore that keeps going beyond what has been drilled so far.

For a miner, that is the best kind of news. It suggests years of extra life may be added to assets that are already in production and generating cash.

Coeur plans to keep drilling through the year, and any confirmed extensions would feed into the reserve figures it reports to investors — the numbers that ultimately move its share price.

The US$1.58 Billion Bet Behind It

Coeur’s Mexican push is recent and expensive. It gained Las Chispas by taking over the Canadian miner SilverCrest Metals in an all-stock deal worth more than US$1.58 billion, completed in February 2025.

SilverCrest had spent years turning Las Chispas into one of the highest-grade silver mines in the world, so the ground was already known to be rich before Coeur swooped in.

That acquisition turned Coeur into one of the world’s larger silver producers, lifting combined output toward roughly 21 million ounces of silver in 2025.

Pouring exploration money into Las Chispas now is a way to justify that price tag — by finding more metal beneath the mine it has only just bought.

What It Means for Mexico and Investors

For Mexico, the spending is a vote of confidence in its mining sector at a time when the industry frets about permitting, security and a government wary of new open-pit projects.

Coeur’s Mexican mines are underground operations, which tend to draw less political heat than sprawling open pits. That may make its expansion plans easier to advance.

The bet is not risk-free, though. Mexican mining has grown politically sensitive, with tighter rules on concessions and water, and security remains a concern in parts of the north.

There is a wider context, too. Foreign miners have long been central to Mexican silver, and Coeur’s outlay adds to a wave of activity that includes local giant Fresnillo’s own recent dealmaking.
