03What to See & DoCULTURE
Damián Ortega, Matéria e Energia — the late-Wednesday window, open until 20h
If you give one rainy afternoon to São Paulo culture this week, give it to the Damián Ortega retrospective at MASP, which on Wednesdays stays open until 20h — the one evening you can see it after work without the weekend crush. The wet forecast makes the indoor case even stronger. Curated by Adriano Pedrosa with Rodrigo Moura and Yudi Rafael, the show runs through September 13 and gathers more than thirty years of the Mexico City artist (b. 1967), the most influential figure of the post-1990s Mexican generation that turned the everyday object into the raw material of conceptual sculpture. After São Paulo it travels to Centro Cultural La Moneda in Santiago in partnership with MALBA Buenos Aires.
What to look for: Cosmic Thing (2002), the exploded Volkswagen Beetle suspended on cables in the largest second-floor room, the work that made Ortega’s international name at the Venice Biennale and the obvious entry point; the photographic series investigating object-as-diagram in the smaller adjacent room; the tijolo and pedra works that read everyday material as social and political geometry. The Brazilian-architecture pieces commissioned for the São Paulo iteration are in the third room. Per Pedrosa in the catalogue, “Ortega’s practice converts the everyday object into a vector of social, economic and political narrative.” Allow 90 minutes minimum.
Where to go after: with the Wednesday late hours, the move is dinner on Avenida Paulista or a walk to the Praça Pôr do Sol if the rain breaks; otherwise the MASP café and shop stay open. R$70 / R$35 meia · free Tuesdays and Sundays · Wed 10h–20h · Av. Paulista 1578.
Pascale Marthine Tayou, Nocaute — the Cameroonian maximalist counterweight to MASP’s conceptualism
If MASP is the Mexican-conceptual rigour, the Pinacoteca Luz is the Cameroonian sensorial maximalism, and the two pair as a Paulista-to-Luz Wednesday with the Linha 1 Azul between them. The Tayou retrospective Nocaute runs through August 2 across seven rooms on the first floor of the Pina Luz — the artist’s first institutional Brazilian show and the strongest contemporary-art proposition the city offers right now alongside Ortega. Tayou (Yaoundé, b. 1966) crosses sculpture, painting and installation with materials drawn from West African market culture and European globalisation: cut crystal, cooking pots, plastic toys, raffia. The work is loud, theatrical, and unexpectedly funny.
Combine route: MASP (15h–18h) → Linha 1 Azul Paulista to Luz (5 min metrô) → Pinacoteca Luz (closes 18h, go early if pairing same-day, or split across two days). Tue–Sun 10h–18h · R$50 / R$25 meia · Praça da Luz 2.
The Allianz night and the wet-Wednesday music alternatives
Wednesday’s tonight pick for much of the city is the Allianz Parque itself for Palmeiras x Cerro Porteño 21h30 (see §08). For those skipping the football on a wet night: Bar Brahma at the Avenida São João 677 corner runs the Wednesday samba-and-choro session 18h–23h, R$30 cover, the Centro institution that has anchored mid-week São Paulo music since 1948. Casa de Francisca at R. José Maria Lisboa 190, Jardim Paulista runs the Wednesday show from 21h, R$80 cover, the city’s most beautiful intimate room and the best bet on a rainy evening.
For samba: Ó do Borogodó at R. Horácio Lane 21, Vila Madalena runs the Wednesday roda from 21h, R$30 cover, the bairro’s reliable mid-week samba with the regulars on the line-up. Bar Samba at R. Fidalga 308, Vila Madalena runs the Wednesday programme from 20h.
For the quiet option: SESC Pompeia at R. Clélia 93 runs the Wednesday Lina Bo Bardi-designed-fábrica programme until 22h, with the convivência tower and the bar open against the rain. Free entry, and the building alone is worth the trip.

08Game DaySPORT
A win seals the last 16, but Abel Ferreira carries six injuries into it
Palmeiras host Cerro Porteño at the Allianz Parque Wednesday 21h30 for Libertadores Group F Round 5, broadcast Globo + ESPN + Disney+. The Verdão lead the group on eight points; Cerro sit second on seven. A win secures the last 16 with a round to spare and likely the top seed. The problem is the medical room: Abel Ferreira is without Felipe Anderson and Ramón Sosa, both injured in Saturday’s 1–1 Cruzeiro draw, on top of Piquerez, Vitor Roque, Bruno Fuchs and Benedetti — six absences leaving only Gustavo Gómez and Murilo as fit central defenders. Allan returns from suspension. Palmeiras are unbeaten in 17 matches and have won six of seven against Cerro under Abel. The sides drew 1–1 in Asunción on April 29. Referee Yael Falcón Pérez (Argentina).
Luciano’s early goal undone by a Dória error; SP stay top but let the lead slip
São Paulo drew Millonarios 1–1 at the Morumbis Tuesday before 62,819 on Dorival Júnior’s debut. Luciano opened the scoring 8’/1T, a long-range shot the goalkeeper Novoa spilled, but Jorge Hurtado equalised 35’/2T after a Matheus Dória error, the finish deflecting off Alan Franco. Millonarios nearly won it: Rodrigo Contreras skied a late penalty. The Tricolor reach nine points and stay top of Group C, still depending only on themselves, but the home draw cost the early cushion. Saturday: São Paulo x Botafogo 17h Morumbis. Corinthians, already through atop Sul-Americana Group E, visit Peñarol in Montevideo Thursday.
09Business & MarketsFINANCE
Tuesday was a sharp risk-off session. The Ibovespa fell 1.52% to 174,278.86 points and the dollar rose 0.86% to R$5.0416, driven by a mix of domestic-political and external pressure. An AtlasIntel/Bloomberg poll showed Senator Flávio Bolsonaro falling six points to 41.8% against President Lula’s 48.9% in a runoff scenario, the swing landing after the leaked audio between Flávio and former Banco Master banker Daniel Vorcaro. Renewed US tariff threats from Trump and BC monetary-policy director Nilton David’s comment that rates stay restrictive until inflation heads to the 3% target added to the caution.
The Ibovespa, which topped 199,000 points intraday on April 14, now holds a gain of under 9% for 2026 after the foreign-flow rotation toward US technology and the repricing of a slower domestic rate-cut cycle. Oil fell after Trump said he had suspended a strike on Iran for negotiations. Today’s calendar: the IGP-10 inflation print for May.
The Selic remains at 14.75%; next Copom meeting June 17–18. The Focus survey continues to show the IPCA 2026 forecast above the BCB 4.5% upper-target band after ten consecutive weeks of upgrades.
