Milei Alleges USAID Funded Electoral Fraud in Brazil’s 2022 Elections

Argentine President Javier Milei has brought renewed attention to the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) by alleging its involvement in electoral fraud during Brazil’s 2022 presidential election.

Speaking at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC), Milei claimed USAID used taxpayer funds to interfere in Brazil’s democratic process, calling it the “greatest political scandal ever seen.”

While Milei did not provide evidence, his remarks align with ongoing scrutiny of USAID under Donald Trump’s second administration. The Trump administration has intensified its efforts to investigate USAID, accusing the agency of inefficiencies and political bias.

President Trump and key allies, including Elon Musk, have criticized USAID as a “radical leftist” institution that mismanages funds. This investigation comes as Trump seeks to realign U.S. foreign aid with national interests, a move that could reshape international development policy.

USAID has faced criticism from multiple fronts. In 2024, it allocated $22.6 million to Brazil for Amazon conservation and Indigenous support, but conservative leaders like Milei and Jair Bolsonaro have accused the agency of using its programs for political influence.

Milei’s Allegations and Ideological Rift

These claims remain unverified, yet they resonate with right-wing audiences questioning the role of foreign entities in domestic affairs. Milei’s statements also reflect broader regional tensions.

His ideological clash with Brazil’s President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has strained relations between Argentina and Brazil. These two nations are key players in South America’s economy.

By aligning himself with Bolsonaro at CPAC, Milei has further distanced himself from Lula, prioritizing ideological alliances over traditional diplomacy. The Trump administration’s investigation into USAID adds weight to these allegations, as it aims to uncover potential mismanagement or misuse of funds.

While critics warn that dismantling USAID could harm global development efforts, proponents argue that greater transparency is overdue. As scrutiny intensifies, the outcome of these investigations could have far-reaching implications for U.S.-Latin America relations and the future of international aid programs.
