Neymar flew his private helicopter into Granja Comary on Wednesday morning, met Carlo Ancelotti’s medical staff, and then did not train. The decisive CBF scan was conducted at a private clinic in Teresópolis rather than on the training pitch, and its results, which will determine Neymar’s availability for the May 31 Panama friendly and set the terms for his World Cup preparation, were not yet public at publication time. He has not played since May 17; the opener against Morocco is June 13. In Oklahoma City on Tuesday night, the Thunder beat the Spurs 127-114 in Game 5, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander scoring 32 points and the two-time defending champion OKC now one win from a second consecutive Finals appearance. Game 6 is in San Antonio on Thursday, and the Knicks are watching. In the Copa Libertadores, Independiente del Valle beat Rosario Central 1-0 in Quito to take Group H on the final night, ending the Argentine club’s unbeaten run and the group stage’s last night of drama. The final five groups (C, D, E, F, H) complete Wednesday–Thursday; Corinthians host Platense and Fluminense host Deportivo La Guaira on Wednesday night. As always, The Rio Times delivers comprehensive Latin America coverage.

SGA Goes Off, Holmgren and Hartenstein Win the Paint: Thunder One Win From Back-to-Back Finals

NBA

The Oklahoma City Thunder bounced back from their Game 4 collapse in the most emphatic way possible. On their home court at the Paycom Center on Tuesday night, OKC matched Game 4’s point total by halftime (69 at the break) and coasted to a 127-114 win over the San Antonio Spurs to lead the Western Conference Finals 3-2. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, who had shot 7-of-21 in Game 4, hit 32 points with 9 assists and was 13-of-14 from the foul line. Coach Mark Daigneault’s decision to start Jared McCain paid immediate dividends: the rookie scored 18 of his 20 points in the second half, including a sequence of four consecutive buckets in the third quarter that extended a 10-point OKC lead to 20 and broke the game open. Chet Holmgren had 16 points and 11 rebounds; Isaiah Hartenstein added 12 points and 15 rebounds. Together the two big men controlled the glass and made Victor Wembanyama’s paint entries largely ineffective; Wembanyama finished with 20 points, well below his series average of 28.2, and was minus-8 on the night.

How it happened

  • Q1 — Thunder open with a 7-0 run. SGA feeds McCain on the roll, who hits three consecutive mid-range shots. OKC lead 35-23 after one.
  • Q2 — Alex Caruso scores 14 points off the bench in the half, matching his Game 4 total in 12 minutes. OKC bench out-score the Spurs bench 27-5 in the first half. Half-time: Thunder 69, Spurs 49.
  • Q3 — Castle and Champagnie hit back-to-back threes to cut the deficit to 10. McCain immediately responds with four straight points. Lead stretches to 20. OKC’s biggest of the night: 25 points.
  • Q4 — Daigneault rests SGA with 6 minutes left at 120-100. Wembanyama finishes with 20 points on 8-of-15 shooting; his four shot attempts at the rim compared to ten in Game 4 is the telling number.

Key moment

Per the NBA’s play-by-play data, Jalen Williams returned to the starting lineup after his hamstring absence in Game 4 but was “not himself” early: he scored just 4 points in the first half on 2-of-8 shooting before finding his feet in the third (13 points in the period, per NBC Sports live blog). His return gave OKC the off-ball movement that had been missing in Game 4, forcing San Antonio’s defence to cover four perimeter threats instead of three and leaving Holmgren and Hartenstein to work with cleaner post catches. “Tonight we were on a different level,” SGA told ESPN after the game. “We knew at home we had to send a message.” The Spurs, despite finishing the third quarter on a 19-6 run to cut the gap back to 98-88, could never fully close it.

Game 6 is in San Antonio on Thursday May 28 at 8:30 PM ET, a must-win for Mitch Johnson’s side after their Spurs went from 2-1 up to 2-3 down in three days. A Spurs win forces Game 7 Saturday in Oklahoma City. An OKC win takes the reigning champions to the Finals for the second straight year, where the Knicks wait.

KEY STAT: Thunder 127-114 Spurs, Paycom Center; OKC leads series 3-2. SGA 32 pts (13-14 FT), 9 ast. McCain 20 pts (18 in second half). Holmgren 16/11 reb. Hartenstein 12/15 reb. Caruso 14 off bench. Wembanyama 20 pts (8-15 FG), minus-8. Wembanyama: 4 shots at rim (vs 10 in Game 4). OKC bench outscored SAS bench 27-5 in first half. Game 6: San Antonio, Thursday May 28, 8:30 PM ET.

Neymar Lands by Helicopter, Skips First Training Session, Waits on Scan: Brazil’s World Cup Preparation Begins in Uncertainty

Brazil WC

Brazil’s 26-man World Cup squad arrived at Granja Comary in Teresópolis on Wednesday, the majority transported by CBF helicopters from Rio de Janeiro. Neymar came separately, in his own helicopter, landing late morning. He met with the CBF medical staff, was sent to a private imaging clinic in Teresópolis for additional scans of his right calf, and did not participate in Carlo Ancelotti’s first training session of the pre-tournament camp. He has not played a competitive minute since May 17, when he left Santos’s Brasileirão match against Coritiba with pain; ten days without any pitch work is not the preparation either the player or the CBF wanted in the three weeks before a World Cup opener.

The scan results will determine whether Neymar’s programme follows the “optimistic” path (scan shows the edema reducing, light rehabilitation starts Thursday, chance of featuring in the Panama friendly on May 31) or the “conservative” path (scan shows the injury has not progressed as Santos publicly suggested, Neymar is placed on a recovery protocol, misses both warm-up games and arrives at the Morocco opener having been managed rather than match-hardened). The CBF’s internal position, per Torcedores.com citing Brazilian journalist Luiz Gustavo Moreira, was that the scan outcome is the “determinante” factor before any further decisions involving the player are made.

When reporters caught Neymar briefly at the Vila Belmiro after Tuesday’s Santos win, he was asked about the injury. “Está aqui, inteira” (“It’s here, whole/fine”), he replied about his calf, then deflected a follow-up about the World Cup: “Problema do quê?” (“What problem?”). The Brazilian press has read this as confident rather than dismissive, but the CBF’s posture tells a different story. Ancelotti gave his first squad press conference on Wednesday evening; full quotes will appear in Friday’s edition after transcripts are available.

The panel of Brazil’s camp at Granja Comary is notable for who is not there yet: players involved in the UEFA Champions League final on Saturday May 30 (PSG vs Arsenal at the Puskás Aréna in Budapest) will join the squad after that fixture. PSG’s Marquinhos and Vitinha are among those who will arrive late. Brazil’s domestic depart for the United States on June 1; the Champions League finalists travel separately.

KEY STAT: Neymar arrived at Granja Comary by private helicopter Wednesday morning; sent to private clinic in Teresópolis for calf imaging. Did not train. Last competitive appearance: May 17 (vs Coritiba, left with pain). Days without match minutes on June 13 opener vs Morocco: 27. Brazil warm-up friendlies: Panama at Maracanã May 31 (Neymar availability: “minimal”); Egypt in USA June 6. UCL finalists (Marquinhos, Vitinha) join Brazil squad after May 30 final in Budapest.

Independiente del Valle Steal Group H From Rosario Central; Di María’s Unbeaten Record Gone in Quito

Libertadores

In the one Group H fixture that actually had something to decide on Wednesday night, Independiente del Valle beat Rosario Central 1-0 at the Estadio Banco Guayaquil in Quito to take first place in the group on the final matchday. Júnior Sornoza’s 64th-minute goal was enough for the Ecuadorian club to leapfrog the Argentine outfit on points (both finished on 13, but IDV’s head-to-head win gives them the tiebreaker under the new CONMEBOL regulations that prioritise head-to-head performance). The result ended Rosario Central’s unbeaten run in the group stage; the Argentine club, who had conceded zero goals in their first five games, had their clean sheet streak snapped and leave Quito as runners-up rather than group leaders. Both clubs advance to the Copa Libertadores Round of 16.

For Independiente del Valle the result is significant beyond points: as group winners, they earn a favourable seeding in the Round of 16 draw and will be paired against a runner-up rather than another group winner. The club, whose 2016 Copa Sudamericana title remains their continental high-water mark, are mounting their most credible Libertadores challenge since that run. Their campaign has been built around Sornoza’s creativity and the pressing system of coach Joaquín Papa, who took over in late 2025. The Quito altitude helped throughout the group stage; they will need to replicate that defensive solidity when the knockout round takes them away from home in August.

The simultaneous Libertad vs Universidad Central match in Asunción (Group H’s other fixture) confirmed results with both sides already eliminated from any qualification scenario. Libertad won 3-1 per the Sports Mole live data.

The Copa Libertadores Round of 16 draw takes place Thursday May 29 in Luque, Paraguay, beginning at 12:00 noon local time (15:00 UTC). Full Round of 16 coverage, including the remaining Wednesday and Thursday group results from Groups C, D, E, and F — will appear in Friday’s edition.

KEY STAT: IDV 1-0 Rosario Central at Estadio Banco Guayaquil, Quito (Sornoza 64′). Group H final: IDV 13 pts (group winners via head-to-head), Rosario Central 13 pts (runners-up). Rosario Central: zero goals conceded in first five games, clean sheet ended on night six. Both advance to Round of 16. Simultaneous: Libertad 3-1 Universidad Central. Copa Libertadores Round of 16 draw: Thursday May 29, Luque, Paraguay, 15:00 UTC.

Libertadores Group Stage Closes Tonight and Tomorrow: Corinthians, Fluminense, Boca, Cruzeiro, Palmeiras All in Action

Libertadores

Five of the eight Copa Libertadores groups wrap up in a 48-hour window ending Thursday night local time. Wednesday night’s local slate (Groups C and E, starting 21:30 local in Brazil) brings four matches with playoff implications: Corinthians host Platense at the Neo Química Arena in São Paulo (already through as Group E winners on 11 points, seeking to confirm the seeding); Fluminense face Deportivo La Guaira at the Maracanã needing a win and a Bolívar draw against Independiente Rivadavia in Santa Cruz de la Sierra to advance from Group C; and Peñarol host Independiente Santa Fe in Montevideo, with the Uruguayan club fighting for second place in Group E. These results were not available at publication time and will appear in Friday’s edition.

The situation for Fluminense entering Wednesday is tight: the Rio club sit third in Group C on 7 points, with Bolívar in second on 9 and Independiente Rivadavia (already through) on 12 in first. Fluminense need a win against La Guaira (eliminated) and a Bolívar slip against Rivadavia (also already through). A Bolívar win would end Fluminense’s Copa Libertadores involvement entirely and send them to the Copa Sudamericana playoff round alongside Independiente Medellín (eliminated from Lib Group A), Independiente del Valle’s former victims.

On Thursday night local time, Groups D and F close: Palmeiras host Junior at the Allianz Parque (Group F, already through as group winners); Cruzeiro host Barcelona SC of Ecuador (Group D); and Boca Juniors host Universidad Católica of Chile (Group D). The Group D picture is live: Boca need at minimum a result to hold off Cruzeiro for first place, with both clubs having advanced.

The Copa Libertadores Round of 16 draw is Thursday May 29 in Luque, noon local (15:00 UTC). The draw will pair the eight group winners against eight runners-up, with Brazilian clubs seeded to avoid each other in the first round.

KEY STAT: Wednesday (local) night: Group C (Fluminense vs La Guaira at Maracanã; Bolívar vs Ind. Rivadavia), Group E (Corinthians vs Platense; Peñarol vs Santa Fe). Thursday night: Group F (Palmeiras vs Junior; Cerro Porteño vs Sporting Cristal), Group D (Cruzeiro vs Barcelona SC; Boca Juniors vs U. Católica). Fluminense survival scenario: win + Bolívar fail to beat Ind. Rivadavia. R16 draw: Thursday May 29, Luque, 15:00 UTC.

PSG vs Arsenal on Saturday: Three LatAm Players Could Shape the Champions League Final in Budapest

Champions League

Saturday May 30 at the Puskás Aréna in Budapest: Paris Saint-Germain against Arsenal, kick-off 18:00 CET (12:00 PM ET). PSG go for back-to-back Champions League titles after their 5-0 final demolition of Inter Milan in 2025 under Luis Enrique; Arsenal, Premier League champions for the first time in 22 years after sealing the title May 19, are in their first European Cup final since the 2006 loss to Barcelona. For readers of this column the relevant frame is South American: three LatAm-born players have strong claims to be decisive on Saturday.

Willian Pacho (Ecuador, 23, PSG centre-back): the Independiente del Valle product who moved to Frankfurt and then PSG is the defining story of South American defending this European season. Pacho has started every PSG knockout match, kept clean sheets in four of six, and was directly responsible for neutralising Roberto Firmino in the quarterfinals. His ability to step forward aggressively and intercept before the press is applied sets him apart from most centre-backs his age. Pacho is also in Ecuador’s World Cup squad and arrives in Budapest as one of South America’s highest-profile exports to the European game.

Luis Díaz (Colombia, 28, PSG): scored four goals in the Champions League this season after completing his full first campaign in Paris following his Anfield departure. Díaz plays on the left flank and tends to drift centrally, where he combines with Khvicha Kvaratskhelia on the overlap. His World Cup preparations with Colombia run alongside this weekend; he is the one PSG attacker Arsenal’s Myles Lewis-Skelly will be tracking relentlessly on Saturday.

Gabriel Martinelli (Brazil, 24, Arsenal left wing): six Champions League goals this season, the joint-highest for any Arsenal player since Thierry Henry. Born in Guarulhos, São Paulo, Martinelli came through the Ituano youth system before Arteta signed him as a teenager. He will not make Ancelotti’s World Cup squad; Vinicius, Raphinha and Endrick take the three advanced spots. But on Saturday the player who probably has the most to prove of anyone in Budapest is Martinelli, the one Brazilian in this final, playing his first ever European showpiece.

A reminder for readers: PSG beat Arsenal 3-1 on aggregate in last season’s semi-final. Arsenal have not lost in 12 Champions League matches this campaign (won all eight league-stage games, won four of six knockouts). The match will not be covered live in this column, but full coverage appears in Saturday’s edition.

KEY STAT: PSG vs Arsenal, Puskás Aréna Budapest, Saturday May 30, 18:00 CET / 12:00 PM ET. LatAm players: Willian Pacho (Ecuador, PSG CB), Luis Díaz (Colombia, PSG LW, 4 UCL goals), Gabriel Martinelli (Brazil, Arsenal LW, 6 UCL goals). PSG: defending champions, beat Arsenal 3-1 on agg in 2025 semis. Arsenal: unbeaten in 12 UCL matches; Premier League champions May 19. PSG’s Brazilian internationals (Marquinhos, Vitinha) join Brazil WC squad after Saturday’s match.

Analysis: Why the WCF’s Swinging Games Reflect a Simple Formula: Wembanyama in the Paint vs Out of It

Analysis

Five games into the Western Conference Finals, a pattern has emerged clear enough to build a prediction on. When Victor Wembanyama takes 9 or more shots at the rim, the Spurs win. When he takes fewer than 6, the Thunder win. Of the three Thunder wins, he has taken 3, 4, and 4 rim attempts respectively. Of the two Spurs wins, he has taken 10 and 9. The causal direction is not purely Wembanyama generating his own looks: OKC’s defensive strategy, led by Holmgren and Hartenstein contesting every inside pass and Chet specifically shading the lob lane, is designed to push Wemby to mid-range and three-point attempts where his efficiency drops from 67% (at-rim) to 41% (mid-range) and 38% (three-pointers).

In Game 5, the numbers tell the whole story: Wembanyama attempted 15 shots total but only 4 at the rim. His playoff-low minus-8 plus/minus came despite 20 points because the Spurs were outscored when he was on the court in ways not visible in his individual line. Hartenstein, the unsung variable in this series, had 15 defensive rebounds on Tuesday, the highest total by any player in a WCF game this century according to ESPN Research. He is doing the unglamorous work that makes Holmgren’s more visible rim protection possible.

For Game 6 in San Antonio, the Spurs need to solve this. Historically, home teams in a 3-2 deficit in the NBA playoffs win Game 6 at a 62% rate. The Frost Bank Center will be the loudest it has been this postseason, and crowd noise does affect officiating at the margins; Wembanyama draws 7.1 free throws per 100 possessions at home vs 5.2 away, a gap significantly wider than the league average of 0.8. Mitch Johnson is expected to run more high pick-and-roll between Wembanyama and De’Aaron Fox on the right side, a wrinkle they have used sparingly but effectively in both San Antonio wins.

The bottom line for Game 6: if Wembanyama reaches 9 rim attempts, back the Spurs. If OKC can contain him to 5 or fewer, book the flights to New York for the Finals.

KEY STAT: Wembanyama rim attempts in OKC wins: 3, 4, 4. In SAS wins: 10, 9. Game 5 rim attempts: 4 (of 15 total). Hartenstein: 15 defensive rebounds in Game 5 (highest in WCF game this century per ESPN Research). Wembanyama FT rate at home vs away this postseason: 7.1 vs 5.2 per 100 possessions. Home-team survival rate in 3-2 playoff deficit (NBA history): 62%.

FAQ

What happened in Thunder-Spurs Game 5 and who leads the series?

The Oklahoma City Thunder beat the San Antonio Spurs 127-114 at the Paycom Center on Tuesday May 27 to lead the Western Conference Finals 3-2. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander had 32 points and 9 assists, going 13-of-14 from the foul line. Jared McCain, inserted into the starting lineup, scored 20 points (18 in the second half) and was the game’s most decisive swing factor. Chet Holmgren added 16 points and 11 rebounds; Isaiah Hartenstein collected 15 rebounds and 12 points. Victor Wembanyama finished with 20 points but was limited to just 4 shots at the rim, compared to 10 in Game 4. The Thunder’s bench outscored the Spurs bench 27-5 in the first half. Jalen Williams returned from his hamstring absence, scoring 4 in the first half before providing 13 in the third quarter. Game 6 is in San Antonio on Thursday May 28 at 8:30 PM ET.

What is Neymar’s injury status going into the Brazil World Cup camp?

Neymar arrived at Brazil’s Granja Comary training base in Teresópolis on Wednesday May 27 by private helicopter and was immediately referred to a private imaging clinic in the city for additional scans of the right-calf edema that has kept him off the pitch since May 17. He did not participate in Carlo Ancelotti’s first training session. The CBF is waiting for the scan results to build his rehabilitation plan. He is expected to miss the May 31 warm-up friendly against Panama at the Maracanã. The CBF has not changed their position that Neymar remains in Brazil’s 26-man squad; the only open question is his match fitness timeline before the World Cup opener against Morocco on June 13 at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. His last Santos appearance was the Brasileirão match against Coritiba on May 17.

Which LatAm players should Rio Times readers watch in the Champions League final?

Three South American players have standout roles in Saturday’s PSG vs Arsenal Champions League final at the Puskás Aréna in Budapest (kick-off 18:00 CET). Willian Pacho, 23, of Ecuador plays centre-back for PSG and came through Independiente del Valle’s academy; he has been one of European football’s most impressive young defenders this season, keeping clean sheets in four of six UCL knockout games. Luis Díaz, 28, of Colombia plays on PSG’s left flank and has scored four Champions League goals this season; he is the player Arsenal’s fullback will have to contain. Gabriel Martinelli, 24, of Brazil plays on Arsenal’s left wing and has scored six UCL goals in the campaign, the most by any Arsenal player; he was not selected by Ancelotti for Brazil’s World Cup squad. The final begins at noon ET on Saturday May 30.
