Honduras Orders Ex-President Hernández’s Arrest Days After Trump Pardon

Less than a week after walking out of a U.S. prison, freed from a 45-year sentence by a “full and complete” pardon from Donald Trump, former Honduran president Juan Orlando Hernández faces a new threat to his freedom.

Honduras’ attorney general, Johel Zelaya, has ordered his “immediate capture” on money-laundering and fraud charges and asked security forces and Interpol to enforce an international warrant if Hernández leaves U.S. soil.

Zelaya announced the move on the eve of International Anti-Corruption Day. He said Honduras had been “scarred” by cartels and criminal networks that destroyed families, emptied communities and drove migration north.

For many Hondurans, Hernández – convicted in New York for sending cocaine to the United States – symbolises that period, despite years of branding himself a loyal partner to Washington’s drug war.

Trump’s pardon upended that narrative. He praised Hernández as a leader treated “harshly and unfairly” and tied the decision to the expected victory of conservative candidate Nasry “Tito” Asfura, promising that Honduras could now look forward to “political and financial success”.

The message resonated with voters who want stability, investment and a tougher line on crime after four turbulent years under leftist president Xiomara Castro. But the election that should decide that future remains unresolved.

Technical failures and a chaotic vote count have frozen results from the 30 November poll, with Asfura holding a narrow lead over centrist broadcaster Salvador Nasralla.

International observers have criticised the electoral authority’s “lack of expertise”, while Castro’s Libre party is demanding annulment. For outsiders, the Hernández saga is more than courtroom drama.
