Flu Win First Three in Libertadores: Daily

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Fluminense won their third successive match in the 2012 Copa Libertaodres last night to ensure they are almost certain to qualify for the knock-out stages. The Tricolor narrowly overcame Venezuelan side Zamora 1-0 at the Engenhão.

Flu dictated tempo but found themselves facing another inspired goalkeeper as they continued to fail to make the crucial breakthrough. Center-half Anderson eventually scored the game’s only goal on 57 minutes when he crisply fired in from the edge of the area.

Also in action yesterday were Vasco, who took a valuable point in Paraguay against Club Libertad, drawing 1-1. Diego Souza had given the Carioca club the lead in the sixteenth minute before controversial refereeing saw the number ten sent off.

Souza received his marching orders for poking Libertad player Benegas in the chest and the referee’s harsh decision nearly sparked a mini-brawl amongst the players. Libertad struck twenty minutes from time through José Nuñez to remain top of the group with seven points. Vasco are in second place on four.
