Congonhas São Paulo Eyes Main Runway Small Aircraft Ban

The operating entity of Congonhas Airport seeks ANAC‘s approval to redirect executive aircraft to alternate runways.

Recent disruptions prompt calls for operational changes at the main runway.

Aena, the operator of Congonhas Airport, has requested the National Civil Aviation Agency’s endorsement to limit the use of the main runway by smaller aircraft.

Through an official communique, the operator conveyed the necessity for “operational tweaks” at the airport. The goal is to enhance safety and streamline runway use.

“Aena is in active discussions with involved parties to jointly enhance Congonhas Airport’s safety and efficiency,” the statement read.

The request follows recent operational interruptions. On a recent Friday, the main runway was closed for an hour due to a Cessna Citation jet’s brake issue upon landing.

This was the second halt of operations on the main runway in a single week.

A private plane’s landing mishap on the prior Wednesday led to a temporary halt in the airport’s operations.

Background

Congonhas Airport, one of Brazil’s busiest, is strategizing to optimize operations. The focus is on the main runway, which handles the bulk of traffic.

Its proximity to São Paulo’s central business district makes efficiency and safety paramount. Recent incidents have highlighted the need for enhanced measures.

Historically, Congonhas has grappled with spatial limitations and high traffic volumes. Its runways, though historically adept, now face modern demands.

The airport’s infrastructure, aging under constant use, must adapt to new aviation standards.

These proposed changes reflect efforts to maintain Congonhas as a top-tier urban airport.
