Chile registers 2.5 homicides a day and “score settling” already represents 30% of the total

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – 2.5 homicides a day are being registered in Chile, according to data from Carabineros and the Investigative Police.

As reported by La Radio, it was a double homicide occurred inside a housing complex in the capital commune.

According to the investigation, the deceased were foreigners, while those responsible have not yet been identified.

In this regard, the Undersecretary for Crime Prevention, María José Gómez, gave figures of homicides handled by the police, showing a significant increase in recent times.

“The latest information we have from Carabineros and the PDI is that we are having 2.5 homicides a day in the country,” she told El Mercurio.

“It is a phenomenon that worries us and that we are addressing,” she said.

“What we see is that there are two very clear phenomena here, the use of firearms, where more than 53% of homicides are committed with firearms, and another phenomenon we see is the settling of scores,” she added.

According to Emol data, in June last year the OS9 of Carabineros quantified an increase in account adjustments of 28% with respect to 2020.

“If in 2016 11% was attributable to this type, today that figure reaches about 30%. There is a focused work that we are developing with the police”, she highlighted.

NEW WEAPONS CONTROL LAW

Regarding the use of firearms, Undersecretary Gómez pointed to the new Arms Control Law.

“The new law, which is already in force, takes care of the problem of weapons, such as the use of blanks that are modified,” she explained.

In this sense, he said that while the regulation is being dictated, the Government banned the importation of blank weapons, which are the most used by criminals, because they modify them to fire real shots.

“Many times they are used as status symbols, such as Glock, mainly by young people”, concluded the authority.
