Brazilian Real Stalls at 5.43 as Inflation Data and Fed Turmoil Keep Investors Cautious

Brazil’s currency held near 5.43 per dollar on Wednesday morning, after a volatile session shaped by inflation figures and renewed uncertainty over U.S. central bank independence.

Data from Brazil’s statistics agency IBGE showed the IPCA-15 index fell 0.14% in August, the first negative print since mid-2023. The decline came largely from electricity rebates, but the 12-month rate stayed at 4.95%, with underlying services inflation still elevated.

Analysts argue that the quality of the drop was poor, since sticky components kept pressure on prices. This mix matters for policy. The Banco Central do Brasil kept its benchmark Selic rate at 15.00% in July and still targets 3% inflation ±1.5 points.

The new data makes large rate cuts unlikely, keeping borrowing costs high and limiting space for the real to strengthen. Global conditions add another layer.

The ICE U.S. Dollar Index hovered near the high-98s, reflecting investor hesitation as U.S. President Donald Trump clashed with the Federal Reserve.

His attempt to remove Governor Lisa Cook triggered a legal fight and fresh doubts about the Fed’s independence, unsettling currency markets.

Market flows show balance rather than panic. BlackRock reports its iShares MSCI Brazil ETF (EWZ) held 186 million shares outstanding on Tuesday, unchanged from the prior day, with 23.5 million shares traded.

On the futures side, B3’s dollar contracts moved in orderly fashion with modest adjustments, suggesting two-way positioning rather than heavy one-sided bets.

Charts confirm the stand-off. On the daily view, the real remains below long-term averages and the Ichimoku cloud, with the RSI near 44 and the MACD negative but stabilizing.

The four-hour chart shows repeated failures to clear 5.45–5.47, while buyers appear near 5.39–5.40, with 5.35 as next support. Bollinger Bands show compressed volatility, pointing to range trading.

The story behind the numbers is one of fragility. The headline deflation gives an impression of relief, but the persistence of service-sector inflation and Brazil’s high interest rates prevent meaningful currency gains.

At the same time, the real cannot rally with conviction because global markets face fresh doubts about the credibility of U.S. monetary policy.

For investors outside Brazil, the message is clear: the real is stable but trapped. Domestic inflation dynamics keep the central bank cautious, while external uncertainty around the dollar’s role leaves traders hesitant.

The pair looks set to hover near current levels until either U.S. political drama settles or Brazil’s inflation data offers a cleaner picture.
