Elections Brazil: João Doria leaves São Paulo government to run for president

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – São Paulo Governor John Doria announced yesterday afternoon (31) that he will leave office to run for President of the Republic in the October elections for the PSDB.

The announcement was made at a press conference during the State Congress of Municipalities held at the Bandeirantes Palace, the seat of government of São Paulo.

Under the 1990 law on ineligibility, public office holders who wish to contest an office other than the one they occupy in this year’s elections must resign from office by six months before the first round of voting.

Therefore, the rule does not apply to candidates seeking re-election. This year, the deadline to leave office is Saturday (2).

“I want to be with you from the next day to show that it is possible to find a new alternative for Brazil, an alternative of peace, work, dedication, humility and integration of all Brazil. I will do this with determination, far from ideology and populism, denouncing corruption and the mishandling of public funds,” João Doria said in his speech, which lasted about 40 minutes.

The event, attended by more than a thousand people, was attended by First Lady Bia Doria, São Paulo Vice Governor Rodrigo Garcia, who is now taking over the São Paulo state government and is a pre-candidate of the PSDB for the next São Paulo state government elections, São Paulo Mayor Ricardo Nunes, PSDB National President Bruno Araújo, and mayors from São Paulo’s interior, among others.

During the event, which was broadcast live on the government’s social networks, a video was shown with a retrospective of the works and actions carried out by Doria during his term.
