Rio State Police Officers Refuse to Join in Reenactment of Ágatha’s Killing

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Following the orientation of their defense counsel, the 11 state police officers involved, directly or indirectly, in the death of young Ágatha Félix, refused to take part in the reenactment of the moment of her death, held on Tuesday night, October 1st, in Complexo do Alemão favela in Rio de Janeiro.

Ágatha’s mother, Vanessa Sales, also did not attend as she was not feeling well.

Eight-year-old Ágatha was shot in the back on the night of September 20th when she was inside a van in the community of Fazendinha, in Complexo do Alemão, together with her mother.

The director of the General Department of Homicide and Personal Protection (DGHPP), inspector Antônio Ricardo, said the reenactment could uncover whether there was a shootout at the time of Ágatha’s death, as the state police claim, or not, as reported by witnesses.

“We hope to come to a conclusion about who fired the shot that killed Ágatha. We want to cross-check the versions given to the police with what we can witness here on the scene. The point is to know if there was a clash or not,” said the delegate, moments before the reenactment began.

The van carrying the girl and her mother, as well as other passengers, was taken to the area. To ensure the safety of the scene during forensics, a contingent of 70 civil police officers and three armored cars was mobilized.
