China’s rapidly evolving innovative power challenges the myth of mere imitation

China continues to stand out as a global frontrunner based on the quantity and quality metrics of scientific research, as highlighted by a recent study from Japan’s educational department.

This trend underscores China’s progressively self-reliant research ecosystem, which is less dependent on Western methodologies.

The study, released recently and built on insights from the UK’s Clarivate, focuses on statistics from 2020 and averages data from the last three years up to 2021.

Findings indicate that China was responsible for nearly one-quarter (24.6%) of all global research publications, a lead of 8.5 percentage points over the U.S., and showcased its prominence with almost 30% of the highly referenced top 10% and 1% papers.

Consistently, China outperformed the U.S. across these benchmarks.

Notably, China has consistently held the premier position in terms of paper publication share since 2017, with a dominating presence in the most-cited top 10% from 2018 and the 1% bracket from 2019.

However, a section of experts believes China’s climb to prominence may be attributed, in part, to local scholars frequently referencing one another.

Interestingly, the current study, for the first instance, compared national vs. international citations.

The analysis revealed that 29% of references to U.S. articles came from its nationals.

For nations like Japan, South Korea, the UK, Germany, and France, domestic citation rates were under 20%.

China, in contrast, stood out with a noteworthy 61%, a significant jump from 48% ten years ago.

Yet, as the Japanese educational body responsible for the study pointed out, China’s prowess in research is undeniable and formidable.

In elite journals like Nature and Science, China’s contributions approach 20%.

While this lags behind America’s dominating 70%, it secures China a respectable fourth position, having edged out countries like Japan and France over the last decade.

Several reports also underline the international acclaim received by prominent Chinese scholars.

On a side note, Japan’s ranking slipped to 13th in the top 10% category, overtaken by Iran, which boasts significant contributions in areas like thermodynamics.

Iran also stands out for the high number of its students pursuing STEM fields in U.S. colleges.

Works from Iran are frequently referenced by peers from countries like China, India, and Saudi Arabia, suggesting the rise of a distinct research alliance within Asia and the Middle East.

Japan has historically grappled with stagnated growth in Ph.D. graduates.

However, there are recent indicators of progress, marked by an increase in students progressing to postgraduate studies and a resurgence in transitions from master’s to doctoral courses.
