‘Sound of Freedom’: a film about child sex trafficking dominates the U.S. box office

“Sound of Freedom,” a movie highlighting the disturbing issue of child sex trafficking, has been making waves in the United States.

Despite initial hesitations about its release since 2018 and facing a flurry of criticisms, the film has surpassed all expectations, outperforming even established franchises like Indiana Jones at the box office.

With its relatively modest budget, it has become one of the most-viewed films in recent weeks.

On its second weekend, the Angel Studios release garnered an additional US$24.7 million, marking a remarkable 26% increase from its first weekend.

The film’s overall earnings stood on July 17, at a substantial US$85.7 million and is estimated to have hit the US$100 million mark today.

Interestingly, the film was initially part of Disney’s holdings, acquired during the purchase of 20th Century Fox in 2019. However, its release was uncertain until recently.

Now, it stands as one of the most lucrative independent films in history.

The success of “Sound of Freedom” is contrasted by the less impressive performance of other highly-anticipated movies, such as the latest installment of the Indiana Jones series.

As the narrative around box office hits evolves, “Sound of Freedom” continues to stand as an unexpected success story, underlining the power of cinema in highlighting critical societal issues.
