Leftist spiritualists say Allan Kardec is racist and launch new editions of books
The group Spiritualists on the Left is releasing the books of Allan Kardec, the greatest reference of this religious line, in editions that correct supposedly racist concepts used in the 19th century when the author wrote his works.
Next month, the religious group will publish The Spirits’ Book – Antiracist Edition.
The work came out after revising the book The Gospel According to the Spirit.
These are e-books that can be downloaded for free.
The discussion began 17 years ago when the Federal Public Prosecutor’s Office of Bahia (MP-BA) received a complaint against the “racist” ideas in Allan Kardec’s work.
The MP-BA agreed with the Brazilian Spiritualist Federation, the Spiritualist Federation of the State of São Paulo, and six publishers to include explanatory notes on the subject.
“They are small notes at the foot of the page pointing to the end of the book; many people don’t even notice that these notes exist; no one reads them,” explained Mariela Bier, a graduate in letters, who participated in the current “anti-racist edition” and did the preface of the book, in an interview with the portal UOL, published on Monday 6.
“Now the observations are in the middle of the text, in a box with an interpretation proposal; there is no way to miss it.”
