The number is slightly higher than the 1,496,858 recorded by the Ministry of Health, which confirmed 48,105 new cases of the disease on Wednesday. In terms of deaths, the portfolio reported an increase of 1,252 occurrences in relation to Wednesday, raising the total to 61,884. The increase is the second-highest recorded, below only to 54,771 on June 19th.

The country also recorded at least 852,000 recovered patients and 582,000 in follow-up, according to data from the Ministry of Health.

710,000 diagnoses in June alone

The over 1.5 million cases are more than double what the media outlets reported on June 8th, when they began conducting the daily survey with State Health Secretariats.

On that date, when journalists began conducting the daily survey reports from the State Health Secretariats, the country had reported 710,887 cases of coronavirus.

Since then, the regions with the highest percentage growth in new diagnoses have been the Midwest (255.56 percent) and the South (170.10 percent).

The Southeast and Northeast doubled their number of cases over the past three weeks and now total 519,951 and 512,442 people with coronavirus, respectively.

Media outlets join forces for better reporting

In reaction to President Bolsonaro’s decision to restrict access to data on the Covid-19 pandemic, media outlets UOL, O Estado de S. Paulo, Folha de S. Paulo, O Globo, G1 and Extra established a consortium to work in cooperation and seek the necessary information directly from the state Health Secretariats of the 27 units of the Federation.
