Nicolás Maduro announces general elections in Venezuela for 2025

Mayors, governors, and deputies of the Venezuelan National Assembly will be elected by universal suffrage in 2025, Nicolás Maduro said on national television.

Each of the offices mentioned by the Venezuelan leader during an event with the youth of the United Socialist Party of Venezuela will be renewed following the Constitution.

“Let’s prepare for the great victory in the presidential elections of 2024, and let’s get ready because, in 2025, there will be joint elections: National Assembly, governorships, and mayoralties,” Maduro said, awaiting official approval from the National Electoral Council.

The last legislative elections in Venezuela were held in 2020 and resulted in a parliament with a Chavista majority, currently presided over by Jorge Rodríguez.

Elections for mayors and governors were held in November 2021 for four-year terms, while National Assembly elections are for five years and presidential elections are for six years.

For its part, the Venezuelan opposition maintains the sessions of the National Assembly elected in 2015 with Juan Guaidó at the head of the institution and the transitional government recognized by Joe Biden’s government.

Also, the Unified Platform, which groups most opposition parties, is preparing for a primary election process that should allow the election of a single candidate to confront Chavism in 2024.
