Peru’s Prime Minister rejects early elections as way out of political crisis
The Prime Minister of Peru, Anibal Torres, rejected the proposal of political sectors on a possible advance of general elections as a way out of the political crisis that the country is going through.
“We cannot go to an advance of elections without modifying the Constitution in those extremes and others, of course. We cannot go to an early election with the same political class. If we want to improve, we have to correct all that through a modification of the Constitution,” Torres communicated in a press conference from Lima.
According to the Prime Minister, changes must be made to the Constitution to bring forward the general elections and for President Pedro Castillo and the current Congress members to leave power.

These changes are aimed at a political reform that would allow new representatives of “another political class” to be elected by the citizens.
Torres said that if this does not happen, the early elections would force the citizens to elect other representatives of the same political parties that currently exist and which are rejected by the majority of Peruvians, according to polls.
Peru is going through a severe political crisis marked by the confrontation between the Executive and the Congress; both powers of the State have very low levels of citizen approval.
Prosecutor investigations for alleged corruption against President Pedro Castillo and people close to him aggravate this situation.
