Mexico will not cooperate with the U.S. under “threats to sovereignty”, says Mexican government

The Government of Mexico will cooperate with the United States in the fight against drugs only if it is based on respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity, said yesterday, Wednesday, the head of the North American Unit of the Mexican Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Roberto Velasco.

Meeting with the Foreign Relations Commission of the Mexican Senate, Velasco clarified that Mexico would not suspend its collaboration with the northern neighboring country on security issues and the fight against fentanyl trafficking despite statements by U.S. Republican legislators against the Latin American government.

“We are not saying that we are not going to move forward (…) the Mexican government is responding, and we are going to deepen our cooperation, but we are not going to do it based on a lack of respect, of saying that we are not doing anything,” the diplomat insisted.

He also minimized the statements of US Republican legislators who seek to declare the cartels as terrorists or attack them in Mexican territory and stressed that he will in no way accept such offensive proposals, assuring that transnational criminal groups in Mexico receive resources from the United States.

“According to the State Department’s most recent annual terrorism report, there is no evidence of terrorist groups in Mexico.”

“The transnational groups that operate in Mexico are fed with money and high-powered weapons from the United States,” he said.
