The president of the Chamber of Deputies of Chile resigns to comply with the political agreement

The president of the Chamber of Deputies of Chile, Raúl Soto, announced this Friday his resignation from the presidency of the Chamber of Deputies, as a result of a political agreement between the ruling party and political parties defined as independent, local media reported.

“I want to make public the presentation of my resignation as president of the Chamber of Deputies of Chile. My resignation is unavoidable and I ask all my colleagues to accept it because I am a man of my word and because in times of many complexities in Chile, entering into power struggles is something very petty, that is why today I decided to step aside and make my position available,” said Soto, a deputy for the Party for Democracy (PPD, center-left), at a press conference.

The Chamber of Deputies must approve or reject the resignation on October 26.

According to the Emol website, Soto resigns to comply with the administrative pact signed between the ruling party and the independents, the DC (Christian Democratic Party or Christian Democracy, center-left) and the PDG (Party of the People, center-right), days before 11 March — the date on which the deputies were sworn in as authorities of the National Congress — which establishes that the first term would be for the PPD and the second for the PC (Chilean Communist Party, left), with the name of deputy Karol Cariola.
