Chile’s Boric chief advisor resigns over alleged drug trafficking connection

Chilean President Gabriel Boric’s chief advisor, Lucía Dammert, has resigned from her post.

Although the government did not give details or reasons for Dammert’s departure, local media Interferencia stated that the decision was made after it became known that the United States had subpoenaed Dammert as a witness in a drug trafficking case.

Dammert is being investigated by the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) because the sociologist and security expert spent years advising Genaro García Luna, Mexico’s ex-minister of public security.

García Luna, who was part of the government of former President Felipe Calderón (2006-2012), has been in custody since 2019.

He is accused of being a collaborator with the Sinaloa Cartel, helping the group, and even participating in planning kidnappings.

Dammert was a close associate of García Luna, and they have written books together on police reform and security issues.

For the time being, Dammert was only asked to be a voluntary witness, with no charges filed against him.

In the same communiqué, the Chilean government announced that sociologist Miguel Crispi, a member of the Party of the Democratic Revolution (Left), would take over the post vacated by Dammert.
