Chilean deputies approve ninth extension of state of emergency in the south affected by indigenous terrorism

Chile’s Chamber of Deputies approved the ninth extension of the state of emergency in the southern macrozone as a result of the conflict that the state and radical groups of the Mapuche people have maintained in recent years, they announced via Twitter.

“The Chamber of Deputies ratifies a new extension of the state of emergency for the Araucanía region and the Arauco and Biobío provinces of the Biobío region,” read the Twitter account of the legislative body.

The initiative must now be considered and voted on by members of the Senate and, if approved, will go into effect immediately.

The regions classified as critical are Biobío, Araucanía, and, more recently, Los Ríos, specifically the provinces of Malleco and Arauco, all located in the south and known to the Mapuche as Wallmapu.
