Dominican Republic sets new passenger record in first five months of 2023

The Dominican Republic has achieved a significant milestone in air travel, with a record-breaking 7,180,905 passengers transported to and from the country between January and May of this year, according to the Civil Aviation Board (JAC).

The president of the JAC, Jose Marte Piantini, highlighted that this figure represents a remarkable 17% growth compared to the same period last year.

He attributed this success to the government’s implementation of measures aimed at boosting the competitiveness of the air transport sector and increasing the flow of travelers.

Punta Cana Airport emerged as the busiest airport, handling 4,069,335 passengers, followed by Las Americas Airport with 2,062,795 passengers during the first five months of 2023.

These two airports accounted for 83% of the total passenger traffic to and from the country.

Cibao Airport transported 772,692 passengers, while Puerto Plata Airport carried 362,421 passengers during the same period.

Marte Piantini emphasized that the JAC has been actively working with other institutions in the sector to enhance the country’s air connectivity.

He cited a recent agreement with Cuba, which allows additional Dominican airlines to operate in the Cuban market, previously limited to only two operators.

The strategy employed by the JAC has resulted in the establishment of new airlines, routes, and agreements, thereby attracting more travelers to choose the Dominican Republic as their destination.

The government aims to continue this upward trend, with expectations of surpassing 17 million passengers transported through the country’s airport terminals by the end of this year.

The accelerated growth of air transport in the Dominican Republic positions it as a leader in the region and reinforces its status as an attractive destination for tourists and business travelers alike.
