Argentina records 83% year-on-year inflation in September, the highest in 30 years

Socialist governed Argentina registered in September year-on-year inflation of 83 percent, the highest in the last 30 years, according to data released today, Friday, by the National Institute of Statistics and Census (INDEC).

The South American country reported in the ninth month of the year a price increase of 6.2 percent compared to August and, thus, accumulated a rise of 66.1 percent so far in 2022.

The price increase figure for the last 12 months is the highest level recorded in the country since December 1991.

The items whose values experienced the highest year-on-year variations were clothing at 118 percent, restaurants, and hotels at 99 percent, food and non-alcoholic beverages at 86.6 percent, and miscellaneous goods and services at 81.2 percent, INDEC detailed.

On the other hand, in the last 12 months, transportation increased 75.6 percent, health 74.7 percent, recreational and cultural activities 74.6 percent, and education 66.6 percent, the state entity added.

In general, prices of goods increased 87.6 percent and those of services 71.5 percent in year-on-year terms.

Meanwhile, in the annual accumulated, the sectors that have recorded the highest price increases are clothing (90.1 percent), restaurants and hotels (71.9 percent), and food and non-alcoholic beverages (69.5 percent).

The Argentine government has stated that combating the scourge of inflation is one of its main economic objectives.

According to the latest market expectations survey conducted by the Central Bank of Argentina (BCRA), inflation in the country could reach triple digits by the end of this year, reaching 100.3 percent.
