Security improves in Mozambique, but hunger remains a challenge

Mocímboa da Praia in Mozambique is no longer a ghost town thanks to improved security, but hunger and food scarcity remain major challenges for residents.

Despite the return of some individuals in search of livelihoods, the area’s agricultural activities, particularly rice cultivation, are hindered by ongoing safety concerns.

The lack of rainfall further worsens the food shortage.

The village of Mute also faces similar difficulties due to the abandonment of fields during the mass exodus in 2021.

However, some businesses, like clothing stores, are slowly recovering.

The recent visit of Mozambique’s Minister of Defense to Mocímboa demonstrates the progress made in the region.

Official visits are now possible, and essential services are gradually returning, although some areas remain vacant.

The damaged hospital is partially operational, including the maternity ward, and the ongoing construction at the port aims to restore its maritime logistics role in the near future.

While signs of recovery are visible, many residents have yet to return.

The government acknowledges the importance of reinstating public services and prioritizes the reopening of the port.

The delegation’s return journey passes by TotalEnergies’ gas project, which holds hope for the village’s revival and lasting peace, despite its current suspension.
