Mozambique among 20 countries with the greatest deficit in energy access

According to the United Nations (UN) Energy Progress Report 2023, Mozambique, a gas powerhouse, is among the 20 countries experiencing the most significant energy access deficit globally, with around 22 million of its 30 million inhabitants living without electricity.

The report states, "22 million people in Mozambique are without electricity," emphasizing that "this lack of electricity access is likely to continue unless there is an investment in renewable energy sources."

However, given the country's abundant gas reserves, the report does not mention that the problem is more likely to be rampant corruption than a lack of energy sources.
