Heavy Rain Hits 78 Santa Catarina Cities, Triggers Emergencies

Heavy rain impacts 78 cities in Santa Catarina, prompting warnings from the state’s Civil Defense.

At least 31 towns have declared emergencies. The rain has caused one death and one injury so far. More storms are expected throughout the weekend.

In some cities, rain levels could go over 80 millimeters starting in the central region. In other areas, expect between 40 to 60 millimeters.

The weather should start to improve by Monday. Since last Tuesday, the Fire Department has been busy.

They’ve handled 184 incidents, including family rescues.

City and state teams are helping, too. They’ve addressed flooding, landslides, and road blockages.

São Joaquim received the most rain but hasn’t declared an emergency. President Lula has expressed concern.

He says that aid is underway to cope with the extreme weather. The focus initially was on the southern coast.

Now, efforts are moving toward the Vale do Itajaí region. Many towns like Agronômica and Araquari have declared emergencies. These are now centers for relief actions.
