Embraer and Brazilian Air Force partner to upgrade A-29 Super Tucano fleet

Embraer Defense & Security and the Brazilian Air Force (FAB) have announced their collaboration on a midlife upgrade (MLU) for the A-29 Super Tucano aircraft.

The upgrade aims to enhance the aircraft’s technological capabilities while maintaining low operational costs.

The FAB currently utilizes the A-29 Super Tucano for various missions, including training, surveillance, and aerial interdiction.

Embraer’s president and CEO, Bosco da Costa Junior, highlighted the extensive list of upgrades already implemented throughout the aircraft’s lifespan, ensuring the platform remains technologically advanced.

Additionally, Embraer is prepared to develop and implement new functionalities and capabilities based on the FAB’s requirements.

The Air Force commander, Lieutenant Brigadier Marcelo Kanitz Damasceno, expressed confidence in the A-29’s performance, emphasizing that the proposed upgrade will enable the Air Force to maintain a modern platform and expand its operational use for years to come.

The upgrades may include advancements in avionics systems, navigation and communication systems, armament range expansion, surveillance, self-protection sensors, and improvements in situational awareness through enhanced human-machine interface.

The FAB currently operates a fleet of 60 A-29 aircraft across multiple squadrons, accumulating over 325,000 flight hours.

The A-29 has gained recognition globally, with over 260 units delivered to more than 15 air forces worldwide, including the United States Air Force.

The A-29 Super Tucano is highly versatile and capable of performing various missions, including light attack, airborne surveillance, interdiction, and counterinsurgency.

It can operate from remote and unpaved airstrips with minimal logistical support, making it a cost-effective and reliable option.

Furthermore, the A-29 serves as an advanced training platform, allowing for realistic combat simulations and efficient data management.

Its advanced sensors and weapons, such as electro-optical/infrared systems and secure communication capabilities, make it a powerful asset for air forces seeking a versatile and effective aircraft.

In summary, the collaboration between Embraer and the Brazilian Air Force to upgrade the A-29 Super Tucano fleet aims to enhance the aircraft’s capabilities and ensure its relevance in modern air operations.
