Chilean Army sets up a modular camp on the border with Bolivia

The Chilean Army is erecting a modular camp for permanent housing use for the troops performing guard duties from the Colchane patrol base in the Tamaragual Province, Tarapacá Region, on the border with Bolivia.

The expandable installation is part of the measures aimed at optimizing the presence of personnel performing border control tasks due to increased migratory flows and crime rates in the regions of Arica and Parinacota, Tarapacá, and Antofagasta.

The head of the Infrastructure Projects Section of the Army, Captain Luis Santis, who is in charge of the installation of the base, told Las Últimas Noticias that “the objective is that the person who arrives to operate in Colchane has all the logistics, welfare, and subsistence support to develop the tasks in the best conditions”.

TECHNICAL CHARACTERISTICS

The containers are metallic steel modules and have a capacity for 36 personnel.

They are watertight and block the passage of water, rain, snow, and wind inside, allowing them to face the inclement weather conditions of the Altiplano, where the temperature ranges between -6°C and 26°C.

Its metallic pillars can be assembled and disassembled for a new location.

Each structure is six meters long and at least 2.5 m wide.

The base will have sewage treatment and water purification plants that process 10,000 liters daily.

It also has a backhoe loader from the Rancagua Motorized Brigade No. 4 for land leveling.

The containers have living quarters, a kitchen, a command post, a dining room, an infirmary, men’s and women’s restrooms, showers, laundry, food storage, liquid and lubricant storage, war material storage, optronic equipment such as vision equipment, radar and sensors for automatic target detection and tracking, and a guard room.
