Brazil: General Júlio César de Arruda will assume command of the Army
General Júlio Cesar de Arruda will assume command of the Brazilian Army this Friday, the 30th. The date for the transfer of the General Command of the Army was agreed by the current commander, Marco Antônio Freire Gomes. The future Minister of Defense, José Múcio Monteiro, is aware of the anticipation.
The commanders of the three Forces communicated their intention to leave their positions in advance, but were dissuaded at the request of the transitional cabinet, according to information from the newspaper O Estado de S. Paulo.
Brigadier Baptista Junior, commander of the Air Force, and Admiral Almir Garnier, commander of the Navy, also scheduled their departure from office for January 2nd and 5th, respectively.

The current Minister of Defense, Paulo Sérgio de Oliveira, also marked his departure from office. The ceremony will be on the 29th of December. Formally, he will remain in office until December 31, the eve of Lula da Silva’s inauguration. He took office in 2022, replacing General Walter Braga Netto, who left the post to be Jair Bolsonaro’s deputy in the elections.
WHO IS JULIUS CAESAR OF ARRUDA
General Júlio Cesar de Arruda, 63, is head of the Army’s Engineering and Construction Department and was a former Military Commander of the East. Arruda is the oldest of the generals occupying the High Command of the Army.
The choice causes few changes at the top of the Force, since, by military rules, no other officer will have to go into reserve with the choice of the new commander.
