Argentina and Brazil strengthen their maritime cooperation after a six-year hiatus

Argentina’s Defense Minister, Jorge Taiana, joined forces with Brazil’s Ambassador, Julio Glinternik Vitelli, and the head of the Argentine Navy, Admiral Julio Horacio Guardia, at the Mar del Plata Naval Base.

They launched two joint naval exercises: the Passex Exercise and the Fraterno XXXVI Operation.

The events are scheduled from August 20-22 in Argentine waters and August 23-28 in Brazilian waters.

These exercises aim to enhance collaboration between the naval forces of both countries, building trust and promoting camaraderie.

Participants will engage in various activities, including anti-submarine, air defense, anti-surface operations, and tactical maneuvers.

From Argentina, participants include the destroyer ARA Sarandí and the ocean patrol vessel ARA Contraalmirante Cordero.

Brazil’s Navy is represented by the frigates F45 MB União and F44 MB Independência and the submarine S34 MB Tikuna.

Notably, two Argentine submarine officers will be aboard the S34 MB Tikuna, highlighting cooperation, especially since Argentina’s submarine ARA San Juan tragically sank.

The Fraterno Operation marks its return after a six-year hiatus.

It emphasizes the mutual commitment of Argentina and Brazil to safeguarding the South Atlantic and their shared maritime interests.

A poignant moment during these exercises was the tribute to the ARA San Juan’s 44 crew members.

Brazilian crews laid a floral wreath in their memory, emphasizing the shared challenges and bonds that naval personnel from both nations experience.
