Tourist flow in Brazil increases 13.5% in 2022

Tourism in Brazil registered a rebound in 2022, with a 13.5 percent increase in the flow of tourists, the Brazilian Association of Tour Operators (Braztoa) reported Thursday.

Braztoa’s latest balance sheet shows that Brazil’s tour operators carried 8.4 million passengers in 2022, a historical record and a 13.5 percent increase compared with 2021.

Of the 8.4 million passengers, 5.4 million chose the domestic market. Most of the trips (38 percent) were destined for the northeast region, where the country’s main beaches are located.

European countries led the preferences in international travel, with 37.71 percent of departures through tour operators, followed by neighboring South American countries, with 15 percent.

Next were North American countries (14.7 percent), Central American and Caribbean countries (13.3 percent), Asian countries (11.3 percent), Africa (6 percent), and Oceania (2 percent).

According to the association representing the sector, the companies’ turnover totaled R$11.55 billion, about US$2.3 billion 62.7 more than in 2021, in a sign of recovery after the national and global restrictions due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“This was the year of the resumption of international tourism. With the opening of borders, the cost-benefit ratio, and the accumulated demand of recent years, we have observed a reversal of the current scenario,” said Braztoa president Roberto Haro Nedelciu.
