Brazil’s role in global climate change discussions highlighted by Lula

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva emphasized that Brazil is once again taking center stage in global climate change discussions and has a crucial role to play in the global fight against climate change.

During his official trip to Rome, Lula stated that the aim was to position Brazil at the forefront of climate discussions worldwide.

Lula highlighted Brazil’s significance as a country with one of the cleanest energy matrices globally and its commitment to achieving zero deforestation in the Amazon by 2023.

These issues were discussed with the President of Italy, the Prime Minister, and the Mayor of Rome.

In an interview with the Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera, Lula attributed the heightened international concern about the Amazon to the policies of his predecessor, Jair Bolsonaro, who he claimed openly encouraged environmental crimes.

Lula expressed the desire to promote a new vision of sustainable development for the Amazon region, which is home to 25 million Brazilians.

This vision aligns with addressing concerns related to the environment and ensuring the well-being of the region’s inhabitants.

During his visit, Lula also met with Pope Francis to discuss various topics, including peace in Ukraine, poverty, inequality, and the environment.
