Lula removes military from Brazilian Intelligence Agency

The Brazilian government has decided to transfer the Brazilian Intelligence Agency (Abin) from the Institutional Security Cabinet (GSI), in the hands of the military, to Casa Civil, a government secretariat closely linked to the Executive Branch held by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

The decision was made official this Thursday.

The work of the GSI during the episodes of the occupation of the Three Powers has been the target of criticism from the new government, which has questioned the inability to prevent what happened and act afterward.

The idea of transferring the Abin to Casa Civil was raised by Lula, who chose Rui Costa – one of his most trusted men – to head this ministry, mainly because of discomfort within the new government over the militarization of the Intelligence services, which is understood to be a relic of the dictatorship.

The GSI, which was in charge of protecting the president and the Planalto Palace until the new administration created the Extraordinary Secretariat of Immediate Security, is commanded by General Marco Gonçalves Dias, a person of Lula’s trust and chosen to purge the high officials related to Bolsonaro.
