Brazil’s VP advocates sustainable industrialization and local semiconductor production

Brazil’s Vice President, Geraldo Alckmin, stressed the importance of sustainable reindustrialization, specifically focusing on developing Brazil’s domestic semiconductor industry.

As the Vice President and Minister of Development, Industry, Foreign Trade, and Services, Alckmin believes that Brazil, as the leading Latin American economy, has the potential to carve out a place in global value chains as a semiconductor producer.

Alckmin spoke about the country’s past deindustrialization and the critical role of promoting sustainable and green reindustrialization.

He emphasized the importance of semiconductors in various industries and mentioned the potential of Brazil’s excellent universities and diverse industries in helping to establish its place in this sector.

Alckmin also highlighted the government’s Semiconductor Industry Technology Development Support Program initiative, which has waived federal taxes on chip and photovoltaic panel component imports until 2026.

This, he believes, will contribute to the semiconductor industry’s growth.

Minister of Management and Innovation Esther Dweck reiterated the semiconductor industry’s importance, citing recent global microchip shortages.

She affirmed Brazil’s potential to become a significant player in the global technology sector.
