Brazilian Navy contracts vessel maintenance services for US$15 million

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The Brazilian Navy has contracted Babcock Marine Devenport Royal Dockyard, a subsidiary of Babcock International, to provide maintenance services for the equipment and systems of the multipurpose vessel NAM Atlântico for the next 48 months in a contract valued at US$15 million.

The Brazilian Navy needs to carry out an intervention on coupling one of the ship’s propeller shafts. It makes a bidding process dispensable due to necessity. Published in the Official Federal Gazette (DOU), the Declaration of Waiver of Tender is a determination of the Industrial Directorate of the Navy and the Rio de Janeiro Navy Arsenal. It includes sending Brazilian personnel to the UK for training and qualification purposes and sending Babcock Marine technicians to provide similar services at the Rio de Janeiro Navy Arsenal.

VESSEL CAPABILITIES

After completing a series of approval stages for its aerial capabilities, the NAM Atlântico is approved to launch and receive helicopters at night using night-vision goggles, including aircraft of the Army Aviation and the Brazilian Air Force.

Soon, with the arrival of the Scan Eagle (Insitu), the ship will be able to launch search, scout, surveillance, and reconnaissance missions with remotely piloted aircraft, expanding the range of operational missions and directing the employment of the embarked helicopters.

With the entry into service of the AH-15B ASuW attack vectors, the NAM Atlântico will have a wide range of rotary-wing aircraft capable of performing anti-surface, troop transport, amphibious assault, search and anti-submarine combat, special forces infiltration, and exfiltration missions, among others.
