Brazil sees 3.4% drop in homicides in early 2023; Rio experiences 17% rise

During the first half of 2023, Brazil recorded a 3.4% decrease in homicides, amounting to 19,700 reported cases.

This is a continuation of a trend from 2022, which saw a 1% decline in intentional violent deaths, the lowest in recent years.

Roraima led the states with the most significant decline at 22.5%. However, in contrast to the national trend, ten states, including Amapá (with the highest increase at 65.1%), saw a rise in violent deaths.

The statistics account for intentional homicides, robberies leading to death, and assaults resulting in death. Notably, these figures do not cover deaths resulting from police interventions.

Experts from Brazil’s Public Security Forum and the University of São Paulo’s Violence Study Center highlight the nation’s still high average of nearly 110 murders daily during the last semester.

While the rates remain high, there’s hope that if the trend persists and police fatalities don’t increase 2023 might close with the lowest intentional violent deaths since 2011.

The decline is attributed to factors such as shifts in Brazil’s drug market dynamics, peace efforts between rival factions, and public security and social policies.

One theory suggests that regional gangs are achieving more stability in their territories after a decade of intense disputes.
