Brazil invites Ecuador to summit of Unasur presidents

The president of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, invited his counterpart of Ecuador, Guillermo Lasso, to the summit of presidents of the Union of South American Nations (Unasur) convened for next May 30 in Brazil, informed this Wednesday the Brazilian Foreign Minister, Mauro Vieira.

Vieira delivered the invitation letter during a private meeting with the Ecuadorian president in the framework of a visit to the Andean country.

“I am the envoy of President Lula to deliver to President Lasso a letter of invitation for the summit of South American presidents in Brazil on May 30 to discuss issues of interest to our region, issues of integration and cooperation,” said the Brazilian diplomat at a press conference at the Government Palace in Quito.

Vieira stressed that “the objective of this summit will be to create the opportunity for a frank exchange of perspectives that will pave the way towards a renewed South American integration”.

At the beginning of April, Lula da Silva made official Brazil’s return to Unasur, a bloc founded in 2008 during the heyday of leftist governments in the continent.

The Brazilian foreign minister added that his visit to Ecuador represents a step towards strengthening and consolidating the friendship between the two countries, whose relationship is going through a “good moment”.

“Ecuador and Brazil, two vibrant democracies, maintain a solid relationship and an intense bilateral agenda,” he said.
