Brazil freezes assets in major move against Amazon deforestation

The Brazilian government has seized assets amounting to 95.6 million reals (approximately 19 million dollars) from businesses and individuals implicated in Amazon deforestation.

This move aims to ensure they pay for their environmental offenses.

This groundbreaking action, reported by the Attorney General’s Office, was sanctioned by the judiciary in the northern Amazon states of Pará and Roraima.

These measures align with Brazil’s recent climate change policy.

Brazil, which encompasses 60% of the South American rainforest, has been undertaking such environmental initiatives under the leadership of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva since January 1.

The government’s legal department stated that they’d filed 34 lawsuits seeking the recovery of assets worth around 479 million reals (about 96 million dollars).

These assets belong to those accused of illegal deforestation for purposes like unauthorized land occupation, mineral extraction, and cattle ranching.

Mariana Barbosa Cirne, the Prosecutor for Climate and Environmental Defense, expressed the importance of these judicial actions to halt environmental harm.

She emphasized the need for sufficient funds for environmental restoration in the event of future convictions. “Our goal is to have the trees standing and the biome restored,” she said.

In its broader environmental commitments, the Brazilian government aims for zero deforestation by 2030.

The nation is also preparing to host the UN Climate Change Conference, COP30, in 2026 in Belém, the capital of the Amazon state of Pará.
