Brazil announces participation in Saudi Arabia meeting on Russia-Ukraine conflict

Brazil has confirmed its participation in an upcoming meeting in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, on the 5th and 6th of August to discuss possible solutions to the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine.

The information was relayed by Celso Amorim, former Foreign Minister and current international affairs advisor to the President, who will attend the meeting via videoconference.

The Ukrainian government stressed the importance of Brazil’s presence, while the Saudi hosts considered the terms of the gathering appropriate.

The meeting will be informal, without a final declaration, to facilitate the exploration of negotiation options.

Around thirty governments have been invited, including G7 members and emerging countries like Brazil, India, and South Africa.

The Russian government has not been invited but has indicated that they will monitor the event closely.

When asked about Brazil’s stance, Amorim emphasized the country’s desire for peace and warned of an increasingly dangerous situation.

He also reiterated the belief that any resolution to the conflict must involve negotiations between both Russia and Ukraine, reflecting a sentiment previously expressed in a videoconference between Presidents Volodymyr Zelensky and Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
