Bolsonaro doubts presidential return

Before his fifth surgery due to a 2018 attack, former President Jair Bolsonaro discussed his legal and political outlook.

In an interview, he vehemently denied having a role in any coup attempts during his term. He also refuted involvement in the violent actions on January 8.

Bolsonaro feels bothered by ongoing coup accusations. “I’ve faced this narrative since taking office, mostly due to military members in my cabinet,” he stated.

Yet, he insists no proof exists of him violating the constitution.

On January 8 incidents, Bolsonaro said he had no part in the protests. He criticized President Lula’s administration for their absence during these events.

Mauro Cid, a former aide, has cut a plea deal. Bolsonaro isn’t worried. “Cid is decent. He won’t make up things,” he said.

Regarding potential arrest, Bolsonaro remained skeptical. “I don’t see that happening within the law,” he commented.

He believes any arrest would only be a “strong-arm tactic.”

Bolsonaro argued his cases should go to lower courts. “Why am I in the Supreme Federal Court where I can’t appeal?” he asked.

As for his political future, Bolsonaro sees a low chance of returning to the presidency. “If it happens, we’ll do better,” he said.

He also noted that criticisms aside, his government left an impression.

Currently, Bolsonaro can’t run for office for eight years. The Electoral Court made this decision in June.

His legal team is working on an appeal. The case involves charges of abuse of power.

Background

Jair Bolsonaro’s political life has been contentious. He’s a former army captain who took office in January 2019.

His government focused on conservative values and economic liberalism. But critics argue his style has deepened social divides.

The accusations of planning a coup are not new to him, they trace back to his military days.

January 8 became a flashpoint for Brazilian politics. The violent events of that day led to a range of legal inquiries.

Some see it as a turning point, symbolizing a shift in Brazil’s already tense political climate.

President Lula’s administration has faced challenges, but January 8 has been particularly scrutinizing for them.
