Brazil: 80 military personnel were summoned to testify on January 8 events
The Federal Police of Brazil has summoned 80 military personnel to testify about the events in which the Three Powers headquarters in Brasília were occupied last January 8.
The statements will take place this Wednesday and are expected to be attended by General Gustavo Henrique Dutra de Menezes, who headed the Planalto Military Command, and Colonel Jorge Fernandes da Hora, who led the Presidential Guard Battalion, reported the Brazilian portal g1.
These interrogations are part of the investigation opened by the Federal Supreme Court (STF), which aims to clarify how the incident occurred and if there was any omission on the part of the authorities.
Justice Alexandre de Moraes, who is in charge of the case, established that the STF has jurisdiction to judge the crimes committed that day, regardless of whether the suspects were civilians or military.
This summons will take place two days after Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva completed 100 days as the head of the Brazilian government.
In a speech, the president recalled “the attacks on democracy, the lack of respect for Human Rights and the income, racial and gender inequalities”.
