The cryptocurrency market continues to show strong bullish momentum as of the morning of May 21, 2025, with Bitcoin trading at $107,438, up 1.33% in the last 24 hours.

This follows an impressive rally that began earlier this week, pushing the global cryptocurrency market capitalization to approximately $3.46 trillion.

Bitcoin has maintained its position above the $106,000 mark after yesterday’s rally, currently trading at $107,438 with a market cap of $2.14 trillion.

This represents a significant increase from earlier this month, as BTC has climbed from $94,000 to over $106,000 in May alone, marking a 13% rise. The flagship cryptocurrency briefly pushed above $106,000 during yesterday’s session before settling at its current level.

Ethereum continues to show strength, trading at $2,593.53, up 1.66% in the past 24 hours with a market cap of $313.71 billion. ETH has been one of the best performers recently, having risen by approximately 50% over the past month.

Other major cryptocurrencies are showing mixed performance:

  • XRP: $2.382 (+0.46%)
  • Solana: $170.87 (+1.17%)
  • Dogecoin: $0.2318 (+2.9%)
  • Cardano: $0.7606 (+2.73%)
  • Litecoin: $95.58 (-1.92%)
  • BNB: $661.2 (+1.68%)

Yesterday’s Market Highlights

Yesterday (May 20) was particularly strong for the crypto market, with all top 100 coins by market cap seeing gains. Ethereum led the major cryptocurrencies with a 7.1% increase, while Solana rose 4.8%. Bitcoin climbed to a high of $106,518 before slightly pulling back.

The total cryptocurrency market capitalization increased by 3.72% to $3.36 trillion, with the Market Fear & Greed Index standing at 68 (Greed).

Trading volume across major exchanges remained robust, with Bitcoin’s 24-hour volume reaching $50.19 billion, though this represented an 18% decrease from the previous day.

Standout Performers

Several altcoins have shown extraordinary performance in the last 24 hours:

  • SXT: Up 25.65% to $0.1362
  • OM: Gained 16.62% to $0.4527
  • KAITO: Increased 14.87% to $2.1771
  • WCT: Rose 14.8% to $0.6778
  • TRUMP: Surged 12.94% to $14.556
  • PI Network: Up 9.66% to $0.8103

AAVE, which was yesterday’s biggest gainer with a 25.59% increase, has pulled back slightly and is now down 1.61% at $260.99.

Market Drivers and Analysis

Institutional Adoption

The recent price surge has been primarily driven by strong institutional interest. Bitcoin ETF net flows reached $329.2 million on May 20, 2025, with IBIT dominating at $287.5 million.

This institutional buying pressure has been a significant factor in Bitcoin’s climb from $67,500 to $69,200 on May 20 alone. However, today’s data shows that Invesco’s Bitcoin ETF reported zero net inflow on May 21, 2025, suggesting a possible pause in institutional buying momentum.

Technical Analysis

From a technical perspective, Bitcoin’s price action shows bullish signals. The 4-hour chart indicated a break above an important resistance level yesterday, with the Relative Strength Index (RSI) moving from 55 to 62, suggesting growing momentum without entering overbought territory.

Bitcoin’s daily RSI stood at 68 as of 2:00 PM UTC on May 20, indicating bullish momentum without yet reaching overbought territory. The 50-day Moving Average for BTC, currently at $88,500, provides strong support.

Charles Edwards, a prominent market analyst, has pointed to several indicators suggesting the crypto market is “poised for massive price expansion”.

On-Chain Metrics

On-chain data reveals a 12% increase in Bitcoin wallet addresses holding over 1 BTC between May 19 and May 20, reflecting continued accumulation despite the price increases.

Glassnode data also showed a net inflow of 12,500 BTC to exchanges on May 20, suggesting potential selling pressure, but this was offset by a 24-hour accumulation of 18,000 BTC by large wallet addresses.

Bitcoin’s price surge stalled just below $106.6K – a level with 31K BTC held at that cost basis. This supply cluster originated on December 16 and remains unshaken, making $106.6K an important level to watch in the short term.

Market Sentiment and Outlook

The overall market sentiment appears bullish after yesterday’s strong performance. According to analysts, unlike the largely sentiment-driven November rally, which saw a 37% increase, the current uptrend appears to be supported by tangible institutional adoption and policy support.

This suggests a more sustainable growth trajectory. “Many of the driving forces appear to be the same with both periods marked by rapid price increases and strong institutional interest,” notes market analyst Toledano.

The cooling of tariffs has helped ease market chaos and increased ETF inflows, contributing to the current rise. The combination of institutional adoption and favorable economic conditions “suggests that the current price levels may represent a new baseline rather than a transient bubble”.

Bitcoin is now the sixth-largest asset globally by market capitalization, having surpassed both Alphabet (Google’s parent company) and silver.

As we move forward, traders should monitor the $106.6K level for Bitcoin as a key resistance point, while also keeping an eye on ETF flows as an indicator of continued institutional interest in the cryptocurrency market.
