Key Facts

  • The COLCAP, Colombia’s main stock index, added 0.94% to close at 2,372 building on its recent recovery as local inflation unexpectedly slowed.
  • July inflation fell to 6.03% from June’s 6.14%, contrary to a Citi survey that had pencilled in 6.2%, easing pressure on household spending.
  • The Colombian peso firmed a fractional 0.08% to 3,156 per dollar, sitting just 1.1% above its 52-week low and 22% below its 52-week high, reflecting a long strengthening run.
  • Oil, Colombia’s top export and a powerful driver of the local market, held broadly steady with Brent crude trading near recent levels, anchoring energy shares.
  • The central bank continued its dollar-buying programme, accumulating US$385.9 million in reserves so far, which is designed to curb excessive peso gains.

Today’s Focus

The COLCAP rose 0.94% to 2,372 on Monday, extending its August recovery from deeply oversold levels. The catalyst was fresh inflation data: annual consumer-price growth eased to 6.03% in July, below the 6.2% expected, giving the Banco de la República — Colombia’s central bank — a bit more room to consider cutting its 9.5% benchmark rate later this year.

The peso barely budged at 3,156 per dollar, a whisker from its strongest level in over a year, as the central bank mopped up dollars to stop the currency from appreciating too far. A strong peso hurts exporters, so the bank has quietly bought almost US$386 million in reserves.

Trading was concentrated in the heavyweight shares — Ecopetrol, the state-controlled oil producer; Bancolombia, the largest bank; and Grupo Sura, the financial conglomerate — though no individual stock moves are verified today. The tone was calm but constructive, mirroring a US session where the S&P 500 slipped just 0.06%.

What matters today. Whether the disinflation trend continues into August, because that would turn rate-cut speculation into a genuine policy conversation.

01 The session in one read

Colombia’s equity market shook off early hesitation and moved decisively higher on Monday, powered by a consumer-price report that surprised almost everyone on the friendly side. The COLCAP, a capitalisation-weighted index of the 25 most-traded stocks on the Bolsa de Valores de Colombia, gained 0.94% to finish at 2,372 — its best single-day showing in roughly a week.

Behind the rally was a number everyone in Bogotá’s financial district had been waiting for: July annual inflation decelerated to 6.03%, down from 6.14% in June and comfortably below the 6.2% median estimate from a Citi survey of market analysts. For a central bank that has kept its intervention rate nailed at 9.5% while pleading for more evidence of cooling prices, the data offered a tangible reason for hope.

The Colombian peso, trading at 3,156 to the dollar, was essentially flat — a mere 0.08% firmer — but that small move masks a big story. The currency has appreciated 22% from its 52-week high of 4,053, and the central bank is actively managing that strength through a dollar-purchase programme that has accumulated nearly US$386 million. A gentle weakening of the peso is actually welcome for a country that depends on dollar-denominated oil exports.

Sentiment also got a lift from the US, where the S&P 500 slipped just 0.06% in a low-conviction session ahead of Wednesday’s inflation print. With global markets mostly treading water, Colombian assets were free to dance to their own disinflation beat.

Assessment — Real disinflation, not just a blip MEDIUM

The inflation print is credible and genuinely below forecasts, which gives Monday’s rally a firm foundation. But one month does not make a trend; core inflation remains stubbornly above target and the central bank has repeatedly warned it will not ease prematurely. The variable to watch is the next inflation expectations survey — if analysts start revising their year-end forecasts lower, the COLCAP’s current bounce could develop into a more sustained re-rating.

02 The day’s numbers

Measure Level Change Read
COLCAP 2,372 +0.94% Colombia’s blue-chip equity barometer
USD/COP 3,156 −0.08% Peso firmed; near 52‑week best
52‑week COP high 4,053 Lowest peso value against dollar
52‑week COP low 3,122 Strongest peso level of the year
Key level 3,200 Psychologically important support for USD/COP

The COLCAP’s 0.94% gain took it to 2,372, a level that still leaves the index nursing a bruising earlier in the year but confirms that buyers are returning. The peso’s 0.08% drift stronger — continuing a long rally that has carried it 22% below its 52‑week high of 4,053 — is a double‑edged sword: good for importers and for taming inflation, uncomfortable for the oil sector and flower exporters who earn in dollars.

From a longer‑term perspective, the peso sits just 1.1% above its 52‑week low of 3,122, which traders are treating as a hard floor. The 3,200 level is the next psychological waypoint for the currency pair, and Monday’s close just underneath it suggests the market is testing the central bank’s resolve.

The session read
The MSCI COLCAP rose 0.27%, with breadth positive — 5 of 9 names higher. Financials led, while Industrials lagged.

03 Why it moved — inflation comes in cooler

The trigger was straightforward. Colombia’s statistics office reported that annual inflation eased to 6.03% in July, continuing a descent that has brought the headline rate down from double digits during the post‑pandemic surge. That is still triple the central bank’s 3% target, but the direction of travel matters enormously to a market that has been betting on when — not if — the Banco de la República will finally cut rates.

Economists had expected 6.2%, so the miss lowered the temperature in the room. Bonds and equities want lower financing costs, and they got the best news they have had in months. Food and housing components reportedly led the slowdown, though full breakdowns will come later.

There was also a regional backdrop giving a subtle tailwind. Brazil’s central bank has just delivered its fourth consecutive Selic cut to 14%, and Chile is already deep into its easing cycle. Colombian investors look around the neighbourhood and wonder whether Bogotá might be next — a line of thinking that makes equities bid.

The central bank’s dollar‑buying operation — US$385.9 million accumulated since the reserve‑building programme was approved at the last board meeting — also shaped Monday’s currency market, capping peso gains without actually reversing them. That fine calibration keeps the exchange rate competitive without stoking a fresh inflation scare from a weaker currency.

04 The day’s movers

Driver Level / Move Change Note
Sector: financials Led the board Banks and insurers bid on rate‑cut hopes
Sector: energy Supported by steady oil Ecopetrol steady; Brent held near recent levels
Individual equities No verified moves today No per‑stock data for Colombia on Aug. 10

Without per‑stock percentage moves and turnover in today’s scan, broader sector signals still tell the story. Financials — for which lower interest rates mean lower funding costs and fewer loan defaults — were the session’s backbone. Energy names were supported by Brent crude holding near steady levels, which anchors Ecopetrol’s revenue outlook.

The absence of verified individual moves today is a reminder that Colombia’s equity market is smaller and less liquid than Brazil’s, with far fewer names generating reliable daily turnover figures. What is clear is that the macro trade — long Colombia on disinflation — is cutting across sectors.

05 The regional scoreboard

Index Country Change
Ibovespa Brazil −0.19%
IPC Mexico −0.75%
IPSA Chile +0.11%
Merval Argentina +1.14%
BVL Perú General Peru +0.19%

Latin American equity markets were broadly mixed on Monday, with no single regional driver dominating. Brazil’s Ibovespa — the region’s largest and most‑traded stock index — slipped 0.19% as investors paused following a strong run that coincided with the central bank’s fourth consecutive rate cut to 14% earlier in August.

Mexico’s IPC was the regional outlier, stumbling 0.75% in a move that likely reflected pre‑positioning ahead of Tuesday’s industrial‑production data. Argentina’s Merval rose 1.14%, breaking a losing run from investors betting on stabilisation under President Milei’s programme, while Chile and Peru posted modest gains. The live market board above carries the latest closes.

06 The technical picture

The COLCAP at 2,372 is climbing back within a descending channel that has persisted for much of 2026, and Monday’s push brings it close to testing the upper boundary near 2,400. Volume data is unavailable for this read, but the move’s character — broad, not driven by a single name — suggests genuine accumulation rather than a short‑covering flash.

A sustained break above 2,400 would mark the first higher high in months and could draw in momentum‑driven funds. Until that happens, range‑bound caution is the prudent read. The peso, meanwhile, is technically overstretched: 14‑day RSI readings on USD/COP are deep in oversold territory, and the 3,122 fifty‑two‑week low is now a magnet. A bounce back toward 3,200 is entirely possible, especially if the central bank ramps up its dollar purchases.

07 What to watch

  • August 12 US CPI: A cooler US inflation print could weaken the dollar globally, putting more downward pressure on USD/COP and testing the central bank’s reserve‑buying resolve.
  • Colombia inflation expectations survey: If analysts start revising their year‑end forecast toward the 3% target, rate‑cut bets will sharpen, with Bancolombia and Grupo Sura among the prime beneficiaries.
  • Oil price outlook: Brent crude’s steadiness is under‑appreciated — any breakdown below recent floors would directly hit Ecopetrol and widen Colombia’s trade deficit.
  • Central bank intervention pace: The US$385.9 million bought so far is modest; a step‑up would signal the bank is unhappy with the peso’s strength and could put a floor under USD/COP.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the COLCAP?

The COLCAP is Colombia’s main stock index, tracking the 25 most‑traded companies on the Bogotá exchange — think of it as the Colombian equivalent of the S&P 500.

Why did Colombian stocks rise on Monday?

July inflation surprised on the downside at 0.11% year on year, feeding hopes that the central bank may soon cut its 9.5% interest rate, which would lower borrowing costs and lift company earnings.

Why is the Colombian peso so strong?

The peso has rallied 22% from its 52‑week low, driven by tight monetary policy, steady oil revenue, and broad dollar weakness. The central bank is now buying dollars to prevent it from becoming too strong.

What should I watch next in Colombia?

The next big domestic data point is the central bank’s policy meeting, but August 12 US inflation data will matter equally, as it could shift global dollar sentiment and directly move USD/COP.
