Belt and Road Forum

Xi criticized one-sided sanctions and geopolitical tension at the event. Without naming any country, his words seemed directed at U.S. policies.

Global Attraction

Both leaders aim to attract developing nations. They compete with the U.S. for influence, especially when it comes to Russia’s role in Ukraine.

Controversy

Despite some Western opposition, Xi remains optimistic. He believes developing countries still find the initiative appealing.

Finance Plans

China intends to invest $10 billion in the Silk Road Fund. Additional funding will also be available.

Attendance

Fewer foreign leaders attended this year, signaling a decline in interest. Nonetheless, several key figures were present.

Private Talks

Xi and Putin had a side conversation. They spoke about deepening trust and a record level of trade between their countries.

Xi and Putin’s discussion marks a notable shift in global viewpoints. Their dialogue offers an alternative to the current U.S.-led world order.

Background

The Belt and Road Initiative started in 2013. It aimed to boost global infrastructure and trade.

However, critics argue it can saddle countries with debt. The U.S. has its own competing visions for global leadership.

For instance, the U.S. promotes democracy and free markets worldwide. Russia and China share a history of challenging U.S. global influence.

They often align on issues like Syria and Iran. This meeting comes when both nations want to expand their influence in a changing global landscape.
