What it is

Vibra buys fuel, lubricants and biofuels in bulk and delivers them across Brazil — to service stations, airlines, factories and farms. It is the largest fuel distributor in Brazil and Latin America, with more than 8,000 stations under the Petrobras brand.

It is a high-volume, thin-margin business: it sold R$189bn (US$36.8bn) of fuel in 2025 but kept barely a penny of profit on each real of sales — a net margin near 1.1% (our calculation), normal for fuel distribution.

Who owns it

No single owner controls Vibra. Petrobras sold its last stake in June 2021, leaving the shares spread among many investors, with a free float above 90%.

The largest holders are professional investment funds: Brazilian asset manager Dynamo held about 10.3%, the Samambaia fund 8.9%, the Previ pension fund 5.2% and BlackRock 5.2% as of mid-2024. With no controlling shareholder, big funds and minority investors steer it together.

Who runs it

The chief executive is Ernesto Pousada, an engineer with more than 30 years’ experience who previously led railway-logistics group VLI and US food-ingredients firm Ingredion.

The board is chaired by Sérgio Rial, the former head of Santander Brazil. In January 2026 Vibra named Mauricio Teixeira — earlier finance chief at health insurer Hapvida and car-rental group Localiza — as its new finance director, effective 2 February.

The money, in plain words

Sales grew about 10% in 2025, from R$172.3bn (US$33.5 bn) to R$189.3bn (US$33.5bn to US$36.8bn) (our calculation). But profit fell sharply, from R$6.4bn to R$2.0bn (US$1.2bn to US$390m).

The drop is mostly because 2024 had been lifted by one-off tax gains, not weaker trading. For every real owners put in, Vibra earned about 14 back over the year — a return on equity of 14%.

Debt is the watch-point. By the third quarter of 2025 net debt stood near R$18.8bn (US$3.7bn), about 2.7 times yearly earnings — high enough that management is prioritising paying it down.

What it is doing now

Vibra is cutting debt and squeezing costs. In the third quarter of 2025 it generated R$3.5bn (US$681m) of operating cash and used it to cut net debt by R$2.3bn (US$447m).

It is also diversifying beyond petrol. Through its now wholly-owned subsidiary Comerc it sells electricity and runs solar plants, positioning for Brazil’s slow shift to cleaner energy.

Meanwhile the core network keeps expanding: it added 117 stations in the quarter to reach 7,922, holding market share around 23.8%.

What to watch

Two things. First, whether margins recover after a squeeze from freight costs and hedging losses, since the distribution business earns so little per litre.

Second, the debt path: management aims to end the year at 2.5 times earnings and below 2 times later, while keeping its policy of paying out 40% of profit. Crackdowns on tax-dodging fuel sellers could also hand legitimate distributors like Vibra extra market share.
